The Mages Guild of the Adventurers of Blackstone

I. Structure of the Guild

The Guild shall be led by a single Guildmaster/mistress who shall appoint an Assistant for each school of Magic when he/she deems this to be necessary to the efficient maintenance of the Guild.
No one who holds any of the aforementioned positions may carry formal allegiance or owe fealty to any Noble of Blackstone or any other land. The sole exception to this shall be allegiances or oaths of fealty directly to His Grace the Duke of Blackstone or to those to whom His Grace owes fealty.

The Guild shall be open to all those adventurers who are capable of casting magic of either school by their own ability, unaided by magical items or the skills of others.
A member of the Guild shall be designated as a “Novice” when he is capable of casting spells but has not achieved the ability to cast Formal Magics.
A member of the Guild shall be designated as a “Journeyman” when he gains the ability to cast Formal Magics.
A member of the Guild shall be designated as an “Adept” when he gains the ability to cast twenty investitures per day in either school of magic without the need to venture into Dark Territory, or the ability to cast a Permanent Circle of Power of both schools of magic without the need to venture into Dark Territory, or the ability to cast nine ninth-circle spells.
Transition to a higher rank of membership will additionally require an interview with the current Guildmaster/mistress. These ranks shall impart different privileges and responsibilities, to be detailed later in this document.


II. Function of the Guild

The Guild shall strive to further knowledge of magic within the adventuring community of Blackstone.
The Guild shall strive to maintain a strong magical defense against the enemies of Blackstone.
The Guild shall strive to organize magical resources in such a way as to best benefit the interests of Blackstone.
The Guild shall strive to create a community of mages such that information and opinions can be freely shared for the benefit of Blackstone.


III. Membership Fees

Each member will be required to pay a yearly fee of twenty gold in exchange for the privilege of membership. Should the member wish, four Formal Magic components with no less than four months of potency remaining to each one may be paid in lieu of twenty gold.


IV. Benefits of Membership

Novice members will receive the following benefits:
Discounted prices on any supplies available for sale by the Guild.
Identifications performed at no charge.
Instruction from senior Guild members on various magical topics at no charge.

Journeyman members will receive the following benefits:
Discounted prices on any supplies available for sale by the Guild.
Identifications performed at no charge.
Instruction from senior Guild members on various magical topics at no charge.
Investiture into the Permanent Circle of their preferred school of Magic, subject to approval of the Guildmaster/mistress and the presiding Noble of Blackstone present at the time.
Free use of Guild circles for the casting of Formal Magics that do not venture into Dark Territory.
Free use of Guild Formal Magic Scrolls for the aforementioned castings.

Adept members will receive the following benefits:
Discounted prices on any supplies available for sale by the Guild.
Identifications performed at no charge.
Investiture into the Permanent Circle of their preferred school of Magic.
Free use of Guild circles for the casting of Formal Magics that do not venture into Dark Territory.
Free use of Guild Formal Magic Scrolls for the aforementioned castings.
Free use of Guild Formal Magic Scrolls for the purpose of copying said scrolls.


V. Guild Meetings

Guild meetings shall be considered both a privilege and a responsibility of all members of the Guild. Meetings shall occur at every gathering in Blackstone, at a time that will be announced during the week preceding the gathering. Non-members will not be permitted to attend. Members shall be expected to attend, and failure to attend two meetings within the span of one year (with the exception of gatherings the person in question did not attend) shall be grounds for disciplinary action by the Guild.


VI. Responsibilities of Membership

Novice members will have the following responsibilities:
Assist senior Guild members in matters related to the Guild.
Make good use of the instruction offered by the Guild, in particular learning to use magical resources effectively.
Share any relevant information at Guild meetings.
Assist in collecting various Guild fees.

Journeyman members will have the following responsibilities:
Assist senior Guild members in matters related to the Guild.
Make good use of the instruction offered by the Guild, in particular learning to use magical resources effectively.
Share any relevant information at Guild meetings.
Instruct Novice members in various subjects at the request of the Guild.
Perform Resurrections at no charge.
Perform Identifications, with all proceeds going to the Guild.
Assist at no charge in casting Formal Magics that are necessary to the defense or progress of Blackstone.
Assist in collecting various Guild fees.

Adept members will have the following responsibilities:
Assist the Guildmaster/mistress in matters related to the Guild.
Make good use of the instruction offered by the Guild, in particular learning to use magical resources effectively.
Share any relevant information at Guild meetings.
Instruct Novice and Journeyman members in various subjects at the request of the Guild.
Perform Resurrections at no charge.
Perform Identifications, with all proceeds going to the Guild.
Assist at no charge in casting Formal Magics that are necessary to the defense or progress of Blackstone.
Assist in collecting various Guild fees.

All members additionally must agree to be bound by the Rules and Regulations of the Guild while their membership remains active.


VII. Cost of Guild Services

All monies obtained from the following services will go directly to the Guild, to be used in purchasing items needed by the Guild, unless otherwise noted.

Identifications performed in a Guild circle shall cost one gold.

The use of a Guild circle to cast a Formal Magic that does not venture into Dark Territory shall cost three gold.

The use of the Guild scrolls to cast Formal Magic that does not venture into Dark Territory shall cost two gold per level of the scrolls being used.

The use of a Guild scroll for the purpose of copying said scroll shall cost five gold per level of the scroll being copied.

The cost of castings of Formal Magics by Guild members shall be negotiated by the member and said member shall be entitled to keep any gold they charge for the use of their abilities.

Formal Magic castings that are necessary to the defense of Blackstone will be performed by Guild members at no charge. When possible, sentences of Obliteration shall be carried out in temporary Circles of Power; with Guild Circles being used for this purpose only if no other option is available.

Guild fees may be paid in Formal Magic components rather than in gold. For components that will retain their potency for at least four months, the rate of exchange shall be eight gold for one component. Exchanges of components that will lose potency in less than four months may be negotiated with the Guildmaster/mistress.


VIII. Formal Magic Component Bank

The Guild shall maintain a Component Bank for the purpose of assisting adventurers in maintaining the potency of their components. Use of this bank will be free of charge, and will be open to anyone who travels in Blackstone regardless of Guild membership.
The bank shall be maintained by the Guildmaster/mistress, who shall be responsible for tracking deposits and withdrawls, as well as ensuring that the bank is available at every gathering. Should the Guildmaster/mistress be unable to attend a gathering, arrangements will be made for another Guild member to maintain the bank during that time.
Adventurers who travel in other lands may make withdrawls between Blackstone gatherings by contacting the Guildmaster/mistress by one week before the time they need their components. The components will then be sent to them via courier.
